Deconstructing Racism Workshops

We'd like to introduce you to Deconstructing Racism. The training is designed to build the capacity of leaders to understand and positively impact racial inequities and disparities in our community. This two-day workshop will help participants better understand racism in its institutional and structural forms. Moving away from a focus on personal bigotry and bias, this workshop presents a historical, cultural, and structural analysis of racism, helping all of us to find a more common and authentic narrative about race in Rowan County and the United States. Deconstructing Racism is intended for those who want to dismantle racism. It has found tremendous success in communities across North Carolina and the country by providing information, analysis, and conversation that helps participants gain clarity about the historical roots and modern-day manifestations of racial inequity. Why? So that we can more honestly address the challenges of institutional racism in our own community. With shared language and a clearer understanding of how institutions and systems are producing unjust and inequitable outcomes, participants should leave the training better equipped to begin work for change.

Our Learning Environment

Deconstructing Racism workshops include interactive lectures, group learning activities, and guided discussion. The two-day workshops hosted by Racial Equity Rowan are held in the Aymer Center, a well-equipped comfortable meeting and dining facility on the campus of Hood Theological Seminary at 1810 Lutheran Synod Drive, Salisbury, NC 28147. Because of funding support from donors in our local community to help underwrite our offerings, we can offer a fee of $225 which is below our cost. (Contact us for scholarship consideration if financial assistance is required to register.)  The workshop includes beverages, morning and afternoon snacks plus a full lunch for both of the two days. You are encouraged to take notes and asked to bring your own pen and paper or e-tablet.
During the ongoing pandemic, we will follow COVID-19 safety protocols with social distancing and mandatory masks.  We strongly encourage full vaccination prior to attendance.

Dismantling personal and systemic racism cannot be accomplished by attending one workshop. We encourage participants to actively engage in our learning (and unlearning) process.
